Who we are

Hull Women's Aid (HWA) is a well-established organisation and an integral part of the voluntary sector in Hull. Nationally, it was one of the early refuge groups set up in the mid-seventies as part of the second wave of the Feminist movement and supported the establishment of the Women’s Aid Federation of England (WAFE) in 1974. The first refuge was purchased in 1973 and HWA became a registered charity in July 1975. Since then HWA has forged effective links with multi agency groups in order to facilitate and improve the provision made for women experiencing domestic abuse. Throughout our growth, HWA has always ensured every action it takes is for the benefit of the women and children we support.

We provide temporary accommodation, a live online chat facility and 24 hour telephone support to women fleeing from or living with domestic abuse. We provide direct advice and individual support to any woman who requests it. We work with partner organisations to improve the quality of life for women and children who are living with/fleeing domestic abuse. We also provide a Floating Support Service which supports vulnerable women and children in their own homes.

Ambassadors and Patrons

Lucy Beaumont

We are thrilled to have Lucy Beaumont on board as Hull Women's Aid patron! With Lucy's support, we are looking forward to continuing our mission of helping survivors of domestic abuse and raising awareness of this important issue. Thank you Lucy for standing with us in the fight against domestic abuse.

“It's a real honour to be a patron of such an important life line to women and children. Victims and survivors are most at risk when leaving or having just left an abusive partner and without the incredible first response and lasting care that women's aid provide, the most vulnerable families in our society would not be safe. ” – Lucy Beaumont
Service Feedback

"I cannot put in words how much I appreciate for all the support I was given since I came to HWA. I have to say that for every woman who works in HWA it is more than just a job. They all are very professional and supportive, they know how hard it is for every woman to be in abusive relationship and they support you like a real family.

It takes time to get over and heal after being in a difficult and destructive relationship, but the most important step is to stop it. You should not stay and hope for better after being hurt. You should not be afraid to ask for help. Especially if you have children. In HWA mothers with children get extra support and help. Your and your children’s lives are the most valuable things you have and you should not live in anxiety and fear caused by your partner.

Please remember that there is a place where you can get help and get back on a way towards your happy life. You are not alone.

Thank you HWA! Thank you so much for being there in my hard time."

"To Hull Women’s Aid - words, as a form of gratitude, is an understatement. I am still wondering how me and my kids would have turned out, had it not been that phone call from Hull Women’s Aid. To think that I had, had rejection after rejection, people not having a clue about the kind of visa I had, as it was a first for everyone. The love we received from the staff was overwhelming. I was lost and hopeless and very much unsure of my decision to leave but the reassurance I got on that first day, gave me hope.

We have never been so grateful to have somewhere we can call “our home”. Through all the trials and tribulations the end was beautiful like the sunrise. We are happy and free to do whatever we want, with the kids because of the support we got from the refuge. I wouldn't have managed to get through with seeking justice if I didn't have the support to build my self esteem.

For the first time we knew we were celebrated by complete strangers who turned into family. We really appreciate all that you did for us. I thank [staff member] for helping me raise my babies. Imagine when we arrived [name redacted] was 9 months old. And when we left she was 2 years 10 months old. To all the women supporting us at Hull Women’s Aid, I say, may the Good Lord increase in abundance in your lives and may you keep on giving your love and putting yourselves in our shoes, keep on changing lives. We love you forever more and you will forever be imprinted in our hearts."
